A driver was surprised to see a “waterfall” cascading onto Highway 85 in Kitchener on Wednesday afternoon.

In a *401 call to 570 News Radio, a local said she was traveling on the highway around noon when, all of a sudden, she noticed water spilling over a barrier edge onto the road. The video she sent shows water rushing from the recently taken down Frederick Street Bridge, making drivers slow down as it collected.

There were minor delays in the southbound lanes until the water suddenly stopped. The City of Kitchener informed 570 News Radio that Kitchener Utilities arrived at the scene to close a valve and stop the flow of water, roughly an hour after it was first reported.

While Kitchener Utilities mentioned online that crews responded to a water main break at 460 Frederick Street, a city spokesperson clarified that there wasn’t an actual break and that a Ministry of Transportation (MTO) contractor was carrying out repairs.

The MTO is overseeing the reconstruction project for the Frederick Street Bridge, and they have been contacted for comments.

This section of the highway is located in the Mannheim Service Area, which has been facing scrutiny due to recent water capacity problems affecting regional growth plans.
