Waterloo Regional Police announced that they had to close Kitchener’s main park on Canada Day due to large crowds and reports of trouble.

A police representative did not share specific numbers, but indicated that officers responded to several calls at Victoria Park and in downtown Kitchener from 4:30 p. m. until midnight regarding disturbances, fireworks being set off in public areas, and other mischief.

Authorities stated that hundreds of individuals gathered in the park and around the downtown area, which led to the decision to shut down the park.

“The park closed at 10 p. m. and officers remained in the area until approximately 1 a. m.,” Const. Chris Iben told in an email.

Police reported that within the downtown park, officers confiscated fireworks from young people, some were charged with trespassing, and one teen faced charges for having a weapon intended for a dangerous purpose.

Iben mentioned that the teen was accused of possessing a harmful substance.

Several incidents are still under investigation by authorities.

The park has experienced issues on Canada Day in past years, including last year when there was a robbery and fireworks were shot at officers, children, and even underneath a baby stroller.
