CTV’s Karis Mapp shares how a curious Kitchener, Ont., girl caught the attention of royalty.

A young artist from Kitchener, Ont., had an amazing surprise after sending her drawing to King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.

Grace Connell, who is just five years old, loves to create art and often draws whatever inspires her.

“She became interested in the King and Queen, so we looked up where they live, that they were real [people], and how old they were,” said Grace’s mother Susan Connell.

After learning all about the Royal Family, Grace decided she wanted to draw them a picture.

“When I went to school the next day, my friend was there, and I drew something with her,” Grace explained.

Susan mentioned that it was a drawing of the Royal Family.

Wanting to support Grace’s enthusiasm, Susan took steps to send the drawing all the way to England.

“Honestly, I didn’t think we’d get anything back. So, I just addressed [the envelope] to Buckingham Palace, put six stamps on it and sent it with [Grace’s] home address,” Susan recalled.

After mailing the drawing at the end of February, Grace would eagerly check the mailbox each week hoping for a reply.

“After a few weeks, I thought maybe I should use Chat GPT or something to write a letter and mail it to her,” Susan said.

She wrote a mock letter and got ready to send it out when something surprising happened on Easter weekend Sunday.

“She asked if we could check the mail one more time, which reminded me that I hadn’t sent out that letter,” Susan explained. “We went to the mailbox with my nephew and sure enough, there was a letter from the King-a correspondence from Buckingham Palace addressed to Grace.”

The personal response came from James Dawson, who is in charge of royal correspondence for the Royal Family.

“The King has asked me to thank you for your splendid drawing,” reads the letter dated April 2. “His Majesty greatly appreciates the tremendous care you have taken to create your lovely artwork and was touched by your kind thought in sending it to the Royal Family.”

Meanwhile, Grace and everyone in her family were amazed by this news.

“(The letter) was just unbelievably touching for her and for us,” said Susan. “If you put your mind to something, anything can happen.”

Grace said she plans on making more drawings for people and hopes one day she’ll visit England and see Buckingham Palace along with King Charles III in person.
