A 28-year-old man from Kitchener has been charged with several offenses after police reported a break-in at a women’s prison on Sunday night.

Waterloo regional police were called to the Grand Valley Institution for Women on Homer Watson Boulevard around 8:30 p. m. on Sunday.

During their investigation, officers found that the man climbed over a fence to get into the yard. Inside the facility, he allegedly assaulted two individuals.

The victims sustained minor injuries.

The man now faces charges for breaking and entering, two counts of assault, and mischief under $5,000. He has been held for a bail hearing, according to police.

If anyone has information about this incident, they are encouraged to contact police or reach out to Crime Stoppers.

A spokesperson for Correctional Service Canada (CSC) stated in an email that someone gained unauthorized access to the site and assaulted two inmates.

The facility was quickly put on lockdown to ensure everyone’s safety, and the lockdown was lifted early Monday morning, according to the spokesperson.

“To prevent unauthorized entry, the institution maintains perimeter surveillance and access control systems, supported by trained staff and technology to detect and deter potential breaches,” the spokesperson said.

“In this case, once the perimeter was breached, the perpetrator was quickly apprehended and detained by CSC until Waterloo regional police arrived and made the arrest.”

The spokesperson added that CSC will review what happened and “take appropriate measures.”
