On Wednesday, smoke from wildfires covered Waterloo Region and surrounding areas, leading to an air quality alert and the declaration of burn bans by local municipalities.

The City of Kitchener put a temporary fire ban into effect at 3:30 p. m., which includes backyard fires. The city announced that no new open burn permits will be granted or approved during this ban.

The Township of North Dumfries has halted all open-air burning and recreational fires, although BBQs and other authorized devices are still allowed.

The township cautioned that it might enforce a total burn ban due to dry conditions that heighten fire risks. Fire officials are keeping a close watch on the situation given these concerns.

Woolwich will also implement a burn ban starting at 12 a. m. Thursday.

“Effective at that time, all active burn permits will be suspended, and no new burn permits will be issued until further notice,” stated a message from the township. “Residential and open-air burning will not be permitted while the ban remains in effect. Propane and natural gas appliances, such as barbecues and gas fire tables, may continue to be used safely in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.”

The Township of Wilmot reminded its residents that both recreational and open-air fires are prohibited while severe air quality warnings are active.

Wilmot is currently under an orange-level air quality warning due to smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario. Residents are reminded that recreational or open-air fires are not permitted during these warnings.
