While southern Ontario is drying out, eastern Ontario and parts of Quebec are set to experience more rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday.

A stagnant upper-level trough is contributing to heavy rainfall this week. Some areas in Central Canada might get between 50-80+ mm of rain. Consequently, Ottawa airport has recorded its wettest month ever with a total of 255.5 mm as of July 27.

The biggest concern will be if storms repeatedly hit the same spots, leading to quick increases in rainfall totals. Local flooding, reduced visibility, and hazardous driving conditions are possible.

More Rain and Storms Expected Wednesday

Thanks to moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, heavy rain and localized flooding risks are anticipated in parts of Central Canada over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Showers and heavy rain may continue into Wednesday and Thursday, with a growing chance of light precipitation lingering later on.

Thunderstorms are also likely again. Severe storms will stay east of the low moving from south to north. Flooding remains a concern for the Laurentians and Ottawa Valley.

This month’s rainfall in Ottawa has officially made it the wettest July since records began in 1938 at its airport, which has seen 255.5 mm as of the afternoon on July 27.

The previous record was set in July 2017 when there were 249.8 mm of rain measured.

Conditions should start to improve from Thursday into Friday, but keep an eye out for more rain over the August long weekend; plan accordingly.
