Ontario Provincial Police are looking into the death of an inmate at the Bath Institution, a medium-security prison located west of Kingston, Ont.

The 49-year-old man was discovered in his cell in “medical distress” just after 10 a. m. Thursday, OPP stated in a news release.

He was initially taken to a local hospital and then airlifted to a trauma centre in Toronto, according to OPP.

The man was pronounced dead on Saturday. His identity has not been released.

The OPP-led penitentiary squad is handling the investigation into the inmate’s death. A postmortem examination will be conducted to find out how he died, police mentioned.
