From Feb. 2 to March 6, Ontarians are encouraged to nominate a police officer in their community who has gone above and beyond to keep their city safe.

The Police Association’s press release states that there are five awards available for officers:

  • On-Duty Difference Maker – Uniform Officer (a police officer who has exceeded job expectations while on-duty).
  • On-Duty Difference Maker – Civilian Police Service Employee (a civilian employee who has exceeded job expectations while on-duty).
  • The Extra Mile Award (for a police officer or civilian employee who performed an extraordinary act of kindness or bravery while off duty).
  • Community Role Model (for an individual who has made significant contributions outside work over time).

According to officials at PAO, those honored demonstrate outstanding courage, compassion and leadership within Ontario’s police force. “ We’re proud to celebrate more than a decade of the Police Services Hero of The Year Awards program which recognizes exceptional service provided daily by our members,” said PAO president Mark Baxter.

In Kingston , one past honoree includes Sergeant Melanie Jefferies. In2023 , she receivedthe Police Hero Honour Roll award for her assistance with a victim connectedto Richard Joyce, a serial kidnapper accusedof sexual assaultand murderduringthe1990s.

Thevictim contacted Jefferiesin2011afterkeepingherexperienceasasecretfor20years, outof fearthatnoonewouldbelieveher.

However, thisconversationwith Sgt. Jefferieschangedher lifeand ledtoherrecovery, she nowusesherpain topromoteawarenessand empowerothers.

In2022, the victim learnedthat Joycewas requestingescortedpassesoutofprison, soshe reachedoutto Jefferieswhoprovidedguidanceand supportbeyond her official duties whenever needed.

The Police Associationof Ontario described Jefferiesas“the epitomeof aprofessional,”adding,“herhonour, integrity, andcommitmenttosupportingvictimsisrare.”

Nominationswillbeaccepteduntil March6 ,2026 , withwinners announcedduringthe Police Associationof Ontario’s Annual General Meetingatth President’sbanquetandawards ceremonyon May28, in Windsor.
