Kingston police have charged a 26-year-old mother from Ontario after they discovered her young child “under dressed” among a group of adults using drugs.

On Thursday, around 8:30 p. m., officers were on patrol in the area of Princess Street and Drayton Avenue.

While on duty, they observed a group of adults “engaging in open air drug use” and noticed a four-year-old child crouching nearby.

“The officers noted the child was under dressed for the current weather conditions and did not have a hat or gloves on,” police stated in a press release.

The police identified the child’s mother within the group, who they claim was involved in drug use as well.

When officers approached, both the mother and child ran into a nearby restaurant, according to authorities.

“Concerned for the child’s safety, officers attended the restaurant and spoke to the female who appeared to be under the influence of both street drugs and alcohol,” police reported.

“Due to her level of intoxication, the female was arrested and the child remained with officers while Family and Children Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington were contacted.”

The police allege that during her arrest, she attempted to separate herself from them by using her child as a barrier before kicking at the officers.

A 26-year-old woman from Windsor, Ont., was charged with resisting a peace officer and failing to comply with conditions of a release order.

The child was taken to Kingston police headquarters before being handed over to child services.
