Tiago Harmsen is one of 20 cadets from all over Canada participating in a six-week Sail 3 course at HMCS Ontario Cadet Training Centre.
Local cadet Tiago Harmsen with 46 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Royal Sovereign in Sault Ste. Marie is making waves this summer as he completes the Sail 3 Course at HMCS Ontario Cadet Training Centre in Kingston, Ont.
Harmsen joined 19 other cadets from across Canada for the six-week program held at HMCS Ontario Cadet Training Centre in Kingston, Ont.
The Sail 3 Course allows cadets to sharpen their sailing skills and earn their CANSail 5 and 6 qualifications, along with their Sail Canada Instructor qualifications, which enable them to become qualified sail instructors, according to a news release.
Throughout the course, cadets gain experience in advanced manoeuvring, rig tuning, sail trim, wind awareness, course planning, and performance sailing to prepare them for competitive sailing and tough conditions.
Cadets also finish the Sail Canada Fundamental Training Course, participate in a Sail Canada Instructor Clinic, and complete Safe Sport Training.
“I’ve learned a lot of competitive tactics, upwind and downwind, while racing,” Harmsen said.
He joined RCSCC Royal Sovereign because his “family was in it, and I wanted to continue from Navy League.” He mentions that during his time in the Cadet Program he has gained “leadership and teamwork.”
He believes the Cadet Program “helps you as you grow to become an adult.” He encourages younger cadets “to try out for everything and always do your best.”
Attending summer training is just one of many activities available for youth at local, regional, and national levels within the Canadian Cadet Program year-round.
The Cadet Program welcomes all youth aged between 12 and 18 years old. It aims to develop confident leaders who are self-sufficient while forming lasting friendships. The program promotes physical fitness, healthy living, and sparks interest in activities related to the Canadian Armed Forces.
