On May 11, Justice Janet Robb presided over Courtroom One at the Ontario Court of Justice on Wellington Street in Kingston. The preliminary hearing is expected to last at least a week.
A preliminary hearing, also known as a preliminary inquiry, is a court proceeding held in serious criminal cases to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. The hearing does not determine guilt or innocence; rather, it serves as a screening mechanism to find out whether a reasonable jury could convict based on the evidence presented.
The accused woman, whose name is withheld due to a publication ban, was present in court and is represented by Mary Cremer of Cremer Barristers in Toronto.
