The preliminary hearing is expected to last at least a week. A preliminary hearing, also known as a preliminary inquiry, is a court proceeding held in serious criminal cases to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. The hearing does not determine guilt or innocence; rather, it serves as a screening mechanism to find out whether a reasonable jury could convict based on the evidence presented. The accused woman, whose name is withheld due to a publication ban, was present in court and is represented by Mary Cremer of Cremer Barristers in Toronto. At the outset , the accused was arraigned on four charges :Failing , as parent , to provide necessaries of life for child under16 years old , contrary tos.215(3)of Criminal Code ; Abandoning orexposing childunder10yearsoldin mannerlikelytoendangerthechild’slifeorpermanentlyinjurethechild’shealth , contrary tos.218ofthe Criminal Code ; Unlawfully abandoningorexposingachildunder10yearsoldinamannerlikelytoendangerchild'slife , contrarytos.218ofthe Criminal Code ; and Second-degree murder , contrarytos.235(1)ofthe Criminal Code. The Kingston Whig-Standard's Noon News RoundupYourweekdaylunchtimeroundupofcuratedlinks, newshighlights , analysisandfeatures.Bysigningupyouconsenttoreceivetheabovenewsletterfrom Postmedia Network Inc.!Awelcomeemailisonitsway.
