Essential “maintenance work” has caused an unexpected closure of part of Highway 2 that links downtown Kingston to the eastern side of the city.
On Friday, Mar. 13, 2026, residents in Kingston were notified of the closure around 11:30 a. m. through announcements from the City of Kingston via social media and email notifications, as well as through Alertable and a press release from Kingston Police. Both local authorities stated that Highway 2 was closed from Ontario Street/The Tragically Hip Way to the west and Highway 15 to the east.
Neither the City nor Kingston Police could provide more information beyond noting that the “maintenance” involved work on the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) pedestrian bridge, which crosses Highway 2 at the Kingston Military Community Sports Centre (KMCSC) near the rarely used old Cavalry House entrance to RMC. Local police and city officials mentioned there was no timeline available for how long this closure might last.
Earlier that morning, Kingstonist received messages from residents reporting chunks of concrete scattered on Highway 2 close to KMCSC. At about 10 a. m., one driver mentioned they had gotten a flat tire after hitting some debris in the road.
With inquiries redirected to city officials, Kingstonist reached out to Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Kingston for confirmation regarding reports that indicated crumbling issues with the RMC footbridge requiring urgent repairs.
“CFB Kingston is aware that the Royal Military College of Canada (RMCC) pedestrian crossover between RMCC and the Kingston Military Community Sports Centre (Base Gym) required immediate attention due to falling debris in the area on March 13, 2026,” said Sub-Lieutenant/Ensign (1st Class) Marion Bec, Public Affairs Officer for CFB Kingston.
Bec informed that CFB Kingston’s Real Property Operations Unit Detachment and military police were sent to assess conditions around the pedestrian bridge “to assess the situation.” The military police then restricted all foot traffic across this bridge while also coordinating with Kingston Police who proceeded to shut down Highway 2 “to vehicle and pedestrian traffic,” according to base officials.
“All personnel working within CFB Kingston have been made aware of this situation,” Bec shared with Kingstonist later in the afternoon on March 13.
Bec added that “for safety reasons,” all vehicle and pedestrian movement on Highway 2 east of La Salle Causeway and south of base gym would be rerouted “until proper measures are taken.” She advised CFB personnel to avoid entering affected areas and follow posted detours and instructions.
<p Regarding how long these closures will persist, Bec mentioned “an assessment is underway concerning structural integrity along with necessary safety measures against potential hazards for those traveling under it.”
“A timeline remains uncertain right now,” noted Bec.
“Further updates will come as soon as it’s safe for reopening.”
The closure has also impacted some routes for local transit services; it’s best to check online with Kingston Transit for current details.
This isn’t an isolated incident where infrastructure issues at CFB Kingston have led to blocking parts of Highway 2 over La Salle Causeway. In fact, back in2019 structural concerns regarding Fort Frontenac caused similar restrictions affecting foot traffic across this stretch until it resumed again during ongoing work into2020. More recently, a watermain issue forced KMCSC’s closure last August without impacting any major roadways at that time.
