The former hockey coach along with Dr. Jamaica Cass are the 2025 recipients from the Kingston area.
A famous hockey coach who became a broadcaster and a physician from Queen’s University have been named as 2025 Order of Ontario awardees.
Don Cherry and Dr. Jamaica Cass are among 30 new members appointed to the Order, announced on Tuesday by Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont.
The Kingston-born Cherry is being recognized for his significant charitable work, particularly in supporting the military and police, youth sports, and animal welfare through Don Cherry’s Pet Rescue Foundation.
He also established Rose Cherry’s Home for Kids in memory of his late wife and actively promotes organ donation.
Cass from Amherstview made history as the first Indigenous woman in Canada to achieve both a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Her leadership and mentorship efforts foster Truth and Reconciliation, enhance representation, and improve health outcomes for Indigenous communities.
A ceremony will be held in Toronto later this year.
