The Ontario police watchdog is looking into a two-vehicle crash in east Hamilton that resulted in serious injuries for two individuals on Friday morning.
According to a press release from the Hamilton Police Service, officers attempted to pull over a black Dodge Challenger near the intersection of King Street E. and Balsam Avenue N. shortly before 6:30 a. m.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) informed CBC Hamilton that the driver of the car, a 44-year-old man, fled the scene after being stopped.
A short time later, the black Dodge collided with a silver Ford Escape at an intersection in the east end. Both drivers-the man and a 61-year-old woman driving the Ford Escape-“were both taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment of serious injuries,” as reported by the SIU.
Now, both drivers are said to be in stable condition, according to the SIU.
In an email, the SIU noted that it was made aware of the incident and activated its mandate “as a Hamilton Police Service officer had attempted to stop the driver of the Challenger prior to the collision.”
As part of their ongoing investigation, police have closed King Street E. between Connaught Avenue North and Leinster Avenue South. The SIU mentioned that roads should reopen by 5:30 p. m. on Friday.
