The latest:

All public and Catholic schools in Hamilton are shut down. Schools under the French board Conseil Scolaire Viamonde in Hamilton, Niagara, and Halton, along with the District School Board of Niagara, Grand Erie District School Board, Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, and both public and Catholic school boards in Halton are also closed. Mc Master University is not open today. Campuses of Mohawk College, Brock University, and Niagara College have also been closed. HSR transit routes are reported to be delayed, and accessible DARTS transit is not operating. City offices in Hamilton are closed too, along with canceled programs at recreation centers.

A significant snowfall impacted Hamilton, Burlington, Brantford, and the Niagara Region overnight, resulting in school closures and affecting commutes on Thursday morning.

Environment Canada warns that more snow is expected throughout Thursday while provincial police advise caution to drivers regarding road conditions.

The Ontario Provincial Police estimated around 12 p. m. that over 200 collisions occurred in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area within the last 24 hours.

They mentioned on X that another 145 vehicles had become stuck in snowbanks or ditches.

“If you find yourself in a snowbank getting stuck, turn your traction control off and get your tires spinning – that might get you moving again,” said Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

The ramp from Highway 403 to Highway 6 northbound was reopened mid-morning after tractor trailers were stuck on the hill heading toward Clappison’s Corner because they couldn’t make it up due to snow buildup, according to police.

Some municipal services affected

The City of Hamilton stated on its website that its administrative offices are closed as well as several facilities; all programs have been canceled including those at recreation centres, arenas, and museums.

The Hamilton Public Library announced that its branches will open late today starting at noon but noted that its Greensville Branch is closed.

Fort Erie’s town hall remains open but offers limited services based on staffing levels according to its website. The leisureplex, arena, libraries, and Historical Museum are all shut down.

In Haldimand County’s administration building and arenas remain operational; however their libraries, museum, and heritage centre will be closed.

Norfork County has canceled activities at Simcoe Seniors Centre as well as Delhi Seniors Centre programs including afterschool care for Delhi kids aged 13+. All these activities have been called off for today.

The County of Brant has announced all its programs and services are canceled or shut down completely.

School closures

This means schools across the region have decided to close their doors for today. All schools under the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) along with those governed by the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) will not hold classes today.

Additionally schools associated with Conseil Scolaire Viamonde located in Hamilton as well as those within Niagara and Halton districts-District School Board of Niagara-Grand Erie District School Board-Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District-and both public/private institutions across Halton are also shut down for safety reasons related to heavy snowfall effects this morning
