HAMILTON, ONT.- The Ontario government is putting over $6 million into apprenticeship pathways and skilled trades training in the Hamilton area.

With support from the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program, Apprenticeship Capital Grant, and Skills Development Fund Capital Stream, the province is backing eight organizations that will prepare nearly 200 individuals for in-demand roles in the skilled trades, as stated in a release.

The organizations include:

Mohawk College is set to receive more than $2.6 million to enhance skilled trades training. This includes $1.89 million through the Apprenticeship Capital Grant to upgrade electrical, carpentry, automotive and millwright training at its Stoney Creek campus. Additionally, they’ll get $483,252 for new electrical training equipment and $265,699 via the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program to train 15 sheet metal workers with hands-on learning opportunities, certifications and paid work placements. YWCA Hamilton will receive $1.85 million through the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program to train 54 participants-mainly women and youth-for careers as automotive service technicians, autobody specialists and welders. Ironworkers Local 736 is getting over $948,000 through both the Apprenticeship Capital Grant and Skills Development Fund Capital Stream to create a new 7,000-square-foot training facility. They’ll purchase modern equipment like overhead cranes and update existing gear so apprentices can use technology that employers currently rely on. This investment aims to support an additional 75 trainees over the next five years. YMCA of Hamilton, Burlington, Brantford is receiving $330,345 through the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program to train 20 participants-mostly youth-in a Truck and Coach Technician program that offers Level 1 training along with employment-readiness support. John Howard Society of Hamilton, Burlington and Area is set to get $321,930 via the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program for machinist and millwright training for 15 participants. The focus is on helping individuals facing employment barriers including those involved with justice systems while providing technical skills training as well as work placements. United Association 67 Technical Trades Academy will receive $59,263 through the Apprenticeship Capital Grant to enhance a welding machine used within their apprenticeship program. Canadian Elevator Industry Educational Program is allocated $59,083 through the Apprenticeship Capital Grant for purchasing power tools such as torque wrenches along with safety-related hand tools plus new digital learning equipment. Finishing Trades Institute of Ontario will gain $52,511 via the Apprenticeship Capital Grant for acquiring a new industrial sandblaster which gives apprentices hands-on experience in surface preparation techniques like rust removal and applying protective coatings using current industry practices found in today’s painting workplaces.
