A provincial court imposed the fine of $600,000 along with a 25 percent victim surcharge. Additionally, Hamilton is required to pay the Bay Area Restoration Council $80,000 to help enhance water quality in the Hamilton Harbour and nearby watershed. This leak lasted 26 years and released up to 337 million litres of waste into the harbour. City officials in Hamilton expressed regret yesterday about the effects this leak had on the community.
