Environment Canada has issued a cold warning for Hamilton, Niagara, Brantford and surrounding areas as temperatures are expected to drop Thursday night and Friday morning.

“Cover up,” said the weather agency.

“Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.”

According to the warning, which was issued across southern Ontario Thursday morning, temperatures will drop in Hamilton to -25 C with wind chill of -32.

St. Catharines and Brantford can expect the same wind chill and temperatures of -21 C and -26 C.

On Friday, the region can expect a wind chill of -32 to -34 in the morning and a high of -12 C in Hamilton and Brantford and -11 C in St. Catharines.

“Watch for colour changes on fingers and toes, pain, numbness, a tingling sensation, or swelling. If present, move indoors and begin warming,” said Environment Canada in the warning.

Warming centres in Hamilton

The City of Hamilton says on its website that recreation centres and Hamilton public libraries are available as warming spaces during regular hours.

The central branch of the library, usually a busy spot for people looking for a warm place, is reducing its hours and will now be closed Sundays due to more people using drugs, as well as buying and selling, outside the building. The new schedule starts Feb. 1.

The Bennetto Community Centre is also open as a warming centre, while all other programs and activities at the centre are cancelled.
