Everyone’s buzzing about the cold. Environment Canada says we won’t get another warm-up until the first week of February.
We’ve been on a weather roller coaster in our area, with some thaws and warmer days. Recently, temperatures have dropped to around -20 C or lower. People CHCH News talked to today are making the best of it.
Winter gear was seen everywhere at Waterdown Memorial Park in Hamilton today.
“I kinda like it. It’s nice and fresh out and gets the kids out of the house and doing something fun,” said one parent with her kids.
For others? They’re counting down the days until it warms up again.
“Not coping at all. I was enjoying our little brief spring break earlier this week. I knew we were going to have good tobogganing weather,” said another parent.
“We’ve had about 100 cm of snow in the Hamilton area, which is about 35 percent more snow than you would usually get,” David Phillips, a climatologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, shared.

According to Environment Canada, that white stuff isn’t going anywhere because sub-zero temperatures hitting -23 C are expected for Hamilton and Niagara.
“In St. Catharines and Welland and Fort Erie, there’s a big snow squall coming. Winds are off Lake Erie. Lake Erie hasn’t frozen over yet. South westerly winds will create lake effect snow that could drop anywhere from 20 to 40 cm of snow tonight and Monday in your viewing area,” Phillips added.
If travel is absolutely necessary, police are advising drivers to plan ahead by clearing all ice and snow from their vehicles.
“Reduce your speed and drive according to the weather conditions. And also remember that the road could be visible one moment and gone the next due to high winds and blowing snow,” said OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk.
One thing people can be grateful for today? The Skate Shack at Waterdown Memorial Park offers a chance to warm up before heading out on the rink. The cold didn’t stop skaters today; however, not everyone was thrilled about it.
“I absolutely hate it. Being cold is the worst. I wear snow pants even when it’s only -1 C so I am always bundling up to stay warm,” said a skater at the rink.
If you’re hoping for a break from these chilly temperatures we’ve been having, unfortunately, you might have to wait until February for that relief.
