The University of Guelph has hit an impressive milestone, becoming the second largest university co-op program in Ontario and the fifth largest in Canada.
For over 40 years, the University has been providing top-notch co-operative education, giving students valuable work experience and chances to explore careers while building professional networks-all while they work towards their degree.
Between 2019 and 2023, U of G nearly doubled its co-op programs from 35 to 65, showcasing its dedication to experiential learning.
“This is a significant accomplishment at any time, but especially during today’s challenging economic and labour market conditions,” says Elaine Fenner, director of Experiential Learning. “I am so proud of the work of our co-operative education team.”
During the academic year 2024-2025, U of G students completed 3,569 paid co-op work terms across three semesters, helping propel the University into second place.
Students have taken on co-op work terms in Guelph, Southern Ontario, across Canada, and even internationally. Recently, U of G-Humber introduced a new co-op option for Business Administration students.
“Gaining work experience in their field of study is such an important component of students’ career development,” says Fenner. “Students build their skills, knowledge, abilities and networks while on a co-op work term. Our focus is to provide more students the opportunity to further their career development through co-op and work-integrated learning.”
The University’s Experiential Learning team has bolstered its staffing capacity during this expansion while maintaining its reputation for exceptional personal support for students throughout their co-op journey. The employment services team has also grown to assist employers with everything from job postings to performance evaluations to regular check-ins during work terms.
After taking an introductory course covering resume writing, cover letter crafting, job searching tips, and interview skills, students can begin work terms lasting from four to twelve months. Depending on their academic program, they typically complete three to five paid work terms.
They find positions in various sectors including private companies, public agencies or non-profits across diverse workplaces such as laboratories, production facilities or even outdoor environments. Throughout their placements, they receive ongoing guidance from staff members who hold regular check-ins with them.
U of G’s co-op program is accredited by Co-operative Education and Work Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL) and follows standards set forth by the CEWIL accreditation council.
