Ontario Provincial Police report that five children have died and several others were seriously hurt after a two-vehicle accident in Wellington County on Friday night.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p. m. at the intersection of Wellington Road 12 and Fourth Line in Mapleton Township, northwest of Guelph.
Authorities say a passenger van with ten occupants collided with a sport utility vehicle carrying one individual at the intersection.
“Tragically, five children lost their lives. I can confirm that the victims are all related,” said Superintendant Dwight Thib during a news conference on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased include four girls and one boy aged between four and twelve, Thib stated.

Matt Burton described the event as a “serious collision resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities.” Burton mentioned that three patients were airlifted to trauma centres, while several others were taken to nearby hospitals. The OPP traffic incident management and enforcement team is now involved in investigating further details about this case. The police stated they won’t release additional information as they work on notifying next of kin for those affected by this incident. The intersection remained closed on Saturday while investigators continued their examination of the area.
