Wildfires are tearing through Northern Ontario, leading to evacuations, destroying vital wildlife habitats, and burning down homes. The province is experiencing one of its most devastating seasons ever recorded. Emergency crews are battling over a hundred active fires in the northwestern part alone, with many blazes still completely out of control.
This situation has sparked a heated public debate about why Ontario’s forests have become such a dangerous fire zone. Online discussions are sharply divided. Some attribute the crisis to climate change, while others point to poor forest management. Supporters of the management perspective argue that years of leaf litter and deadwood buildup have set the stage for disaster.
While forestry practices do play a role in fire behavior, the truth is much more complicated. Ze’ev Gedalof, a wildfire scientist and researcher at the University of Guelph, explains that applying broad forestry criticisms to Ontario shows a basic misunderstanding of local ecology.
