The City of Guelph is teaming up with the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) to finalize an agreement that will transfer 126.16 acres of land along Niska Road to the city, aiming to increase park space.
The GRCA board anticipates that the city will buy the land for $756,960 using funds from its parkland reserve. This planned acquisition includes 101.41 acres north of Niska Road, which covers the former Frank Kortright Waterfowl Management Area and connects Crane Park to Niska Road, along with 24.75 acres of Natural Heritage System south of the road. Agricultural land designated for residential development south of Niska Road won’t be part of this purchase.
As part of this deal, the GRCA plans to contribute up to $350,000 for building trails and restoring natural areas, recognizing the city’s historical efforts in putting together this property. Both organizations aim to establish a joint working group with community members to oversee trail development and environmental restoration.
“This planned land acquisition is very exciting for the city,” said Gene Matthews, general manager of parks. “As our community grows, we need to increase the amount of park space available so there’s room for everyone to enjoy the outdoors.
“The Niska lands bring Natural Heritage System land, trail network expansion and space for a future community park into our parkland system.”
The city plans to start restoring trail access in the coming months and will involve residents in planning future amenities for the park. Although there’s no specific budget or timeline set yet for full park development, this purchase is just the beginning of a multi-year initiative aimed at enhancing recreational spaces in Guelph.
“We applaud the city for valuing the benefits of spending time outdoors for its residents and for its commitment to conserving these natural lands,” said GRCA director of conservation lands.
The acquisition is made possible through contributions from developers into the city’s parkland reserve fund. Updates on this project will be shared on the City of Guelph website.
