Conservative Party of Canada Leader Pierre Poilievre made a strong effort to channel Prime Minister Mark Carney during his speech in Calgary on Friday evening, with mixed results.

If Mr. Poilievre’s aim was to show that he’s aware of the shifting political landscape in Canada and can appeal to less attentive voters while still holding onto his supporters’ “conservative principles,” then his address before the leadership review vote clearly hit the mark.

Shortly after the audience applauded, he received 87.4 percent of the delegate votes, surpassing the 84 percent garnered by Stephen Harper during his leadership review in 2005.

However, whether Mr. Poilievre can maintain an image of moderation and balance is another story altogether.

“Obviously elections teach us lessons,” Mr. Poilievre humbly remarked at one point during his speech. “And for that I want to thank all of you in this room. You have provided such valuable input in the lead-up to and throughout this convention.”

Still, he continued, “one of the most important lessons I have gained from listening to you throughout this convention is that you told us to ignore the voices who keep telling us to abandon our Conservative principles. We will remain true to our Conservative principles.”

And therein lies the issue! To reference a headline from last month: “Pierre Poilievre’s Biggest Selling Point Is Now a Huge Liability.” The piece in Politico noted that Mr. Poilievre’s media strategy inspired by Trump worked well-until it didn’t.

In other words, some conservative values-as viewed by someone like Mr. Poilievre, influenced by MAGA ideology and admiration for U. S. President Donald Trump-are part of why he lost both his Ottawa-area seat and the general election last April 28.

“Canada’s Conservatives Give Their Trump Inspired Leader a Second Chance,” said The New York Times as a concise summary of the leadership review vote. “Pierre Poilievre, a populist who led the Conservative Party to defeat last year, was retained as its leader on Friday, despite his dismal poll numbers,” added the sub-head on their story. With headlines that spot-on and comprehensive, reading further may not be necessary!

Regardless, Mr. Poilievre’s meticulously planned performance lasted three quarters of an hour and came off as reasonable enough that even Prime Minister Carney-though liberal-might have felt comfortable delivering everything except for some overtly partisan remarks.

Mr. Poilievre donned a sharply tailored blue suit befitting a banker; he made an effort to smile frequently and mostly succeeded without losing composure-of course having an encouraging crowd of party delegates already aligned with him meant there was no need for aggression.

However, if you listen closely enough-even with a moderate tone-there were plenty of MAGA cues mixed into statements that sometimes contradicted each other.

At one moment he described how residents in one Ontario city are being advised due to an extortion wave on their street “to move into their basements to minimize being hit -the chance of being hit -by a stray bullet!”

Just moments later he promised to protect “the rights of law-abiding firearms owners, stopping the Liberal gun grab, and putting money into border security.”

It seems there’s no clear line between stray bullets and high numbers of privately held firearms.

For every seemingly logical point raised by Mr. Poilievre, a mention followed about cancel culture or identity politics, some predictable issues often brought up on both sides across Canada-U. S. border.

But ultimately, this doesn’t matter much since most Canadians won’t take time or interest hearing speeches like these fully, and social media clips will target specific audiences via algorithms.

For similar reasons, everything considered, M r. P o i l i e v r e ’ s polished delivery fr iday-a clear improvement over juvenile insults directed toward journalists when faced with tough questions-still merits careful fact-checking. Because not all facts shared by M r. P o l i e v r e w ere completely accurate.

Cowtown is where he’s from so it’s not surprising he’d repeat Premier Danielle Smith’s claims about mistreatment suffered under Trudeau government over past decade.”While federal government stomps on Alberta’s energy sector,”as phrased; you know, b y making every Canadian taxpayer contribute roughly $35 billion towards Trans Mountain Expansion Project.(That’s around $900 for each person living here, mind you;85% don’t even reside within Alberta.)

Not mentioning either how recently reported,”The share Canada’s crude petroleum flowing outside United States reached record levels last November, hitting highs previously seen since Trans Mountain pipeline aided efforts toward trade diversification.”

By blaming Liberals alone for separatism issues occurring Quebec &Alberta , M r. P o i l iev re also seemed unaware regarding role Lucien Bouchard played. He served under former Conservative PM Brian Mulroney until aligning himself alongside separatists back early nineties then became leader opposition when Bloc Québécois elected54 MPs1993.Lucien Bouchard appears omitted from discussions surrounding responsibility assigned solely upon Liberals concerning separatism troubles faced country-wide throughout years.( Photo : Markbellis / Creative Commons ).

But really-it’s just details. Wouldn’t be hard listing many examples. Mr. Poil iev re closed out declaring intentions aimed restoring hope amongst Canadians promising solutions tackling numerous issues-including ones tied closely40 years neoliberal economic policies central current-day Conservatism ideology.

“Hang on! Have hope,”he urged attendees.”Help is coming!”

“Give us hope!”chanted enthusiastic young Conservatives gathered around them backing him along side cheering loudly.

“To paraphrase late Ronald Reagan, u. s. president through1980s whom clearly M r. P o il iev re must’ve read, the ten scariest words ever uttered modern Can adian English simply state:”I’m from Conservative Party! Help is coming!”
