Cometh the hour, cometh the book!

Actually, On Treason: Alberta Separatism, Foreign Interference, and Canada’s Survival in a Revolutionary Age is more than a little late. It rolled off the presses only a few days before Danielle Smith’s divisive and treason-adjacent separation referendum is due to take place on Monday.

This short book by international relations expert, former RCMP intelligence manager, Edmonton resident, and one-time federal political candidate Patrick Lennox is an essential quick guide to the plots and politics of Alberta’s separation referendum, the dangers of which should be obvious to all. If they are not obvious to you, they are made so in the pages of On Treason.

Alas, it comes too late to play the role it could have and should have in the continuing “shakedown approach to federalism” orchestrated by Alberta’s premier and her separatist-dominated United Conservative Party.

Never mind. Thanks to the exertions of Ms. Smith and the UCP, we are likely going to be stuck with this damned secessionist subversion for a long time, no matter the outcome of Monday’s perverse referendum on a referendum. This is true even if Alberta’s voters decisively reject breaking up one of the most successful experiments in democracy in the history of the earth, our Canada.

Dr. Lennox’s lucid little book – a sort of Canadian J’Accuse! – will, I strongly suspect, prove its value in the months ahead and help illuminate the way for Canada to grapple with similar disruptions, many more of which we Canadians are likely to face in the coming months and years.

In the best and most accurate sense, On Treason is a jeremiad – that is, a sustained lament combined with righteous prophecy of destruction if the unrighteous will not change their ways. This is a term I admit is usually used with sarcasm in these pages. But not always.

Like all the best jeremiads – including those supposedly written by Jeremiah – On Treason hits precisely the right note about what we Canadians risk if we don’t face up to what has been illustrated so clearly by those behind Freedom Convoy culture-war antics who now dominate both United Conservative Party and its leader.

Of course Dr. Lennox starts his analysis on government-drafted Oct. 19 separation referendum along with its nine additional questions by stating that “each question seeks to undermine Canada at a moment when our nation faces great peril.”

“The first five questions deal with matters related to immigration-a federal jurisdiction issue-while four others tackle constitutional questions that Alberta can’t change alone. The last question asks whether Alberta should even remain part of Canada at all. The bigger question though is why these plebiscites are happening now during such revolutionary times.”

Dr. Lennox goes on to answer that question sharply and comprehensively. No need for an alert: The spoiler’s already revealed in his title-it’s treason. Perhaps not as defined legally under Canada’s Criminal Code but treason nonetheless based on how normal folks typically define it throughout history.

When Premier Smith along with UCP pressed forward with their referendum about another referendum plus its nine ridiculous side questions, Dr. Lennox claims it was indeed an act of treason.

To some people this might seem like jumping ahead too quickly or far too much but across 202 pages (not counting footnotes or acknowledgments), Dr. Lennox makes an impressive argument backing this claim up fully well as he guides readers through how despite frequent contrary assertions; Alberta’s modern grievances against Confederation have little connection with traditional western complaints-they emerged from fraud during COVID-19 pandemic instead.

“Criminals and conmen plus hucksters alongside conspirators leading this separatist movement,” he states plainly adding that “They’re dangerous actors showing complete disregard towards standards governing professions while ignoring electoral regulations.” He continues saying they’ve taken control over democratic processes within Alberta using something seemingly harmless like provincial plebiscite enabling foreign interference from global far-right allies.”

“It terrifies me writing this,” Dr. Lennox notes later; “but I think we’re really unprepared for what’s headed our way; believing falsely that Canada somehow remains immune against threats faced worldwide keeps us passive when we oughta be actively engaged!”

At core lies his main point here stating boldly: “This referendum regarding holding another one about Alberta’s future within Confederation represents an enormous lie,” clarifying further “It’s imposed upon citizens intending reshaping views around Confederation.”

“Canada stands as representative constitutional democracy where less than one percent among Albertans voted previously for fringe separatists during recent elections; courts ruled twice recently confirming any secession vote unconstitutional violating treaties themselves.”

“Pushing through regardless constitutes act upon treasonous ground-a form psychological warfare aligned alongside Trump administration efforts questioning our existence as sovereign nation!”

I may disagree entirely about every single argument found herein belonging publisher Biblioasis’ series regarding public interest topics-but nearly each major point stands thoroughly researched making core conclusions difficult disputing effectively!

In final chapter offers insight into fighting back defending Canada’s integrity – Although lacking formal legal background possessing Ph D International Relations expertise brings familiarity laws guiding suggestions offered therein! Nonetheless whatever path chosen navigating crisis must happen urgently undertaken mirroring intensity facing attacks endured currently!”

Unfortunately can’t quote entire content hence would encourage you reading yourself priced affordably $24.95 paperbacks $20.99 ebook format although if seeking brief summary check out op-ed authored Dr. Lennox featuring arguments presented recently edition!

NOTE : Regular readers know seldom publish reviews books here – Only second ever occurring past two decades onto publication site thus experience gathered reveals insights shared inside accurately depict ongoing crises confronting Albertans today ! DJC
