OTTAWA – Nunavut MP Lori Idlout mentions that influencing decisions that impact her community during a critical period for Canada’s North was a significant reason behind her choice to join the Liberal government.

The news about Idlout becoming the first NDP member to switch to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal caucus surfaced late Tuesday night.

In a statement from the Liberal party, Idlout shares that she reached her decision after discussions with her constituents and noted that new threats to Canada’s sovereignty have sharply highlighted the situation in the North.

In a welcoming statement for Idlout into the Liberal caucus, Carney emphasizes that a strong North is vital for creating a more secure and thriving Canada.

The prime minister also commends Idlout for building a solid connection with her community even though she represents an area as large as Mexico.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly states that the Arctic region holds great importance for the Carney government and believes Idlout is eager to engage in Ottawa’s planned investments.
