On Prime Minister Mark Carney’s first day of discussions in Beijing, the government reached an agreement to collaborate more closely with China on both clean and conventional energy after years of challenging relations between the two nations.

However, they haven’t yet settled an ongoing tariff dispute.

This non-binding energy deal signifies the beginning of ministerial-level talks that a senior Canadian official mentioned haven’t taken place in nearly ten years.

Beijing also did not promise to purchase additional Canadian petroleum or liquefied natural gas (LNG) in a memorandum of understanding signed by Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson.

“They are very clear, they would like more Canadian products,” Hodgson told reporters.

The memorandum builds on a prior agreement and states that both nations will discuss oil and gas resource development, LNG along with liquefied petroleum gas, and emission reductions.

Carney is visiting China as part of his plan to move past years of diplomatic strain with Beijing and aims to double non-U. S. exports over the next decade. He’s set to meet with China’s President Xi Jinping on Friday.

At this point, there’s no indication of any breakthrough regarding Beijing’s retaliatory tariffs on Canada’s agriculture sector, which includes canola, and Canadian officials remain tight-lipped about what they might do to resolve it.

China is looking for trading partners that ‘don’t use energy for coercion,’ Hodgson says

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson, who answered questions alongside Industry Minister Mélanie Joly during their visit to China, didn’t provide specific details when asked about potential energy exports but stated that officials there seek reliable partners and “want more of what we’ve got.”

Instead on Thursday, Canada and China inked an economic and trade cooperation “road map,” outlining plans to enhance trade following years of diplomatic hurdles.

The two countries also agreed to boost exports of Canadian pet food to China, enhance tourism efforts, and renewed previous agreements aimed at combating crime.

“We’re now in a new era of partnership with China,” Industry Minister Mélanie Joly told reporters.

Carney conveyed to China’s Premier Li Qiang during their meeting that teams from both countries have been collaborating recently “to address some specific issues that have built up over time” while laying down the groundwork for a new strategic partnership between Canada and China.

The progress made lately will help position Canada and China “for the new world order,” Carney stated.

The prime minister added that through collaboration, both nations could create “greater stability, security, sustainability and prosperity for all of our peoples.”PHOTOS | Carney’s China trip in photos:

Earlier in the day , Li informed Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand that Carney’s visit marks a turning point in relations , indicating Beijing is ready to eliminate barriers while enhancing communication & trust.

But even as relations seem bettering , Carney faces significant pressure concerning relief for Canada’s agricultural sector from Beijing’s retaliatory tariffs.Cross Country Checkup wants your thoughts: How does Canada’s relationship with China affect you? China imposed these levies last year after Canada matched American tariffs regarding Chinese electric vehicles , steel & aluminum.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe accompanied Carney in Beijing discussions , raising hopes a deal could be finalized soon.

However , Joly remarked “there’re still negotiations happening.”

Anand noted Wednesday that discussions were ongoing & deemed “productive” towards persuading China into reducing its tariffs impacting agriculture.

Years Of Diplomatic Tension

Ahead Of The Visit , A Canadian Official Who Spoke On Condition Of Anonymity Stated That The Government Hopes To Make Progress But Might Not Achieve A “Definitive Elimination” Of China’s “Unfair” Tariffs.
