Canadians might feel a sense of déjà vu as three new byelections are set to take place, marking the latest round of polls this year.
Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed that the votes for the ridings of Beaches-East York in Ontario, Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec, and North Vancouver-Capilano will happen on Aug. 31.
This comes just three months after voters in three Ontario ridings participated in elections that gave the Liberals three more MPs and marked their first majority since the 2015 election.
All three seats became vacant earlier this summer, with one MP stepping away from politics, another being appointed as an ambassador to the European Union, and a third being elevated to the Senate.
Nate Erskine-Smith left his position for Beaches-East York earlier this month, two months after he lost the Ontario Liberal Party nomination for Scarborough Southwest. He previously mentioned to local media outlet Beach Metro Community News that he intended to resign as MP regardless of winning the nomination. Now, he’s considering running for a seat on Toronto city council.

This riding is viewed as a Liberal stronghold that has been held by the party since Erskine-Smith’s win in 2015; however, it was previously occupied by the NDP following its 2011 Orange Crush.

Richard Martel was appointed to the Senate by Carney earlier this month after the prime minister removed non-partisan criteria for appointments that had been established. The current seat count shows that Liberals hold 172 seats, Conservatives have 139, Bloc Quebecois claims 21 seats while there are five NDP MPs and one Green MP. Additionally, there is one independent member, Alexandre Boulerice, who was elected under an NDP banner but switched his status as he plans to run in Quebec’s upcoming election later this year. This leaves one vacancy in Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton in Quebec which opened up when former Bloc MP Simon-Pierre Savard Tremblay departed from politics.
