(via CPAC) Canada and its western allies have had to carefully handle the unpredictable behavior of U. S. President Donald Trump as he makes bolder moves around the world. Political scientist Luke Ashworth from Memorial University explains that Prime Minister Mark Carney and other leaders need to assess each situation closely, from the situation involving Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to Trump’s concerning comments about Greenland. This week, Trump threatened tariffs against several countries that opposed his claim over the island. Ashworth notes that Canada’s responses have mostly aligned with those of its western European partners, which makes sense given the circumstances. He mentions that this is all about figuring out “what’s the right balance between appeasement of Trump and stroking the ego of the administration to get the United States back on board, or at what point do you actually have to stand up and be counted?” He highlights that this strategy was reflected in Canada’s somewhat subdued reaction to Trump’s actions in Venezuela, but “the much more direct responses you got over Greenland.”
