A 17‑year‑old G2 driver from Welland, Ont., is facing several charges after the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported he was caught driving at 202 km/h on Highway 406 – and officers later found two more passengers hiding in the trunk of his car.
The event took place around 8:21 p. m. on March 15, when Burlington OPP officers were patrolling near Highway 20 and stopped a northbound vehicle that was clocked at almost double the posted speed limit of 110 km/h.
Initially, police noted that the car seemed to have four passengers. However, as they prepared the vehicle for towing, they opened the trunk and discovered two additional teens inside, increasing the total number of occupants to six.
The teenager, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), has been charged with stunt driving – excessive speed (202 km/h in a 110 km/h zone), careless driving, novice driver – passenger violation, failing to surrender permit and not having an insurance card.
Authorities state that the vehicle belongs to the teen’s father. It has been impounded for two weeks, and his driver’s license has been suspended for a month.
“Members from Burlington OPP at the Niagara location are regularly conducting proactive patrols to eliminate this type of life-threatening behaviour,” OPP wrote on X.
