The Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) has approved a contentious expansion of the Nelson Aggregates quarry – despite years of pushback from the City of Burlington, environmental organizations, and local residents – allowing the company to move forward with its plans.
This quarry sits in rural north Burlington, on 2 Sideroad between Cedar Springs Road and Guelph Line. It’s close to Mount Nemo Conservation Area on the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO biosphere reserve that hosts countless species of wildlife and plants.
City officials and opponents expressed their disappointment and renewed worries following Tuesday’s ruling that approved the expansion of the Burlington quarry.
Nelson Aggregates, on the other hand, welcomed the decision and stated it would help them continue “supplying the high-quality aggregate our growing region needs while delivering significant long-term community and environmental benefits,” said Quinn Moyer, president of the company in an emailed statement.
In its ruling, OLT mentioned that Nelson’s site plan drawings and adaptive management plan had “satisfactorily responded to the concerns raised by the City, the Region, and CORE/PERL.”
Conserving Our Rural Ecosystems and Protecting Escarpment Rural Land (CORE/PERL) was one of several groups that provided evidence against this expansion.
The OLT noted that Nelson adequately addressed issues related to “the monitoring of ground water and surface water, protecting natural heritage features, controlling fugitive dust, and addressing safety concerns regarding blasting and fly-rock.”
“The Tribunal finds that expanding the Burlington Quarry represents a wise use of mineral aggregate resources while balancing public interest.”
‘Extremely disappointed’
CORE/PERL expressed feeling “extremely disappointed” by this approval.
