An Ontario company has been hit with a $50,000 fine after a worker fell 14 feet and sustained critical injuries in Burlington.
The incident took place on April 10, 2023, at the Stobag North America Corporation manufacturing site while a worker was checking out a recurring problem with a powder coating line drying oven.
The worker was using a powered lift to reach the top of the oven when the lift got struck by a seven-metre-long toolbar being moved by an overhead conveyor, according to Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
This led to the worker falling 14 feet and suffering “critical injuries,” as stated by the ministry.
An investigation found that Stobag “failed to take the reasonable precaution of ensuring that control measures and/or methods were in place to prevent material in motion from striking the elevated lift.”
<p. As a result, the company was fined $50,000 along with a 25 percent victim fine surcharge directed to a special provincial government fund aimed at helping victims of crime, as required by the Provincial Offences Act.
