Much of the snow in Hamilton has melted away, and with temperatures reaching 8 C on Friday, it might feel like winter is behind us. But that’s not the case.

Environment Canada predicts that in Hamilton and much of southern Ontario, it could feel as chilly as -30 C Sunday night into Monday morning.

“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill,” Environment Canada said in its warning Sunday afternoon.

The federal weather agency’s alert spans communities from Tillsonburg to Owen Sound in the west, and Kingston and the Kawartha Lakes region in the east.

Hamilton and Halton Issue Their Own Alerts

Hamilton’s medical officer of health issued a cold alert around 4 p. m. Sunday, stating that the city has informed community agencies that support vulnerable people and will keep recreation centres and libraries open for warming during regular hours.

In a news release, the city mentioned that staying indoors is best during a cold alert. If you have to go out, they advise dressing in layers, protecting your face and feet, drinking warm liquids, and avoiding strenuous exercise.

Even though Burlington and Oakville aren’t part of Environment Canada’s alert, Halton Region Public Health also put out a warning. Burlington Public Library branches will be available for warming during normal hours as well.
