Authorities are looking for suspects and the driver of a white sedan in connection with a shooting that occurred north of Brampton this week, which may relate to ongoing extortion issues.
The event took place around 4:20 a. m. at a commercial plaza on Riddell Road close to the Caledon and East Garafraxa Townline, according to the OPP.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported; however, investigators suspect that a white sedan, potentially a Honda, was involved.
Police think this shooting was targeted and are urging anyone with information to step forward.
“Those who live locally or were in the area around the time of the incident are asked to check their surveillance, doorbell and dashcam footage for anything that could assist the investigation,” the OPP says.
In recent years, there has been a rise in extortion threats aimed at members of the South Asian community across B. C., Alberta, Ontario and Nova Scotia. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown mentioned there’s a possibility that this crime wave could spread from “hotspots” like Brampton “to every city in Canada.”
While most cases have been seen in larger cities, there are also numerous extortion cases being investigated in rural Ontario.
: Violent extortion threats extend beyond Brampton into small Ontario towns
The Caledon and Dufferin OPP detachments announced last month they have over 50 active extortion investigations. An additional 10 incidents have been reported in regions such as Norfolk, Brant, Middlesex and Wellington.
The OPP is reminding everyone to stay alert and report any suspicious behavior to authorities right away.
