The Brampton facility was initially set to manufacture the new Jeep Compass; however, due largely to pressure from the Trump administration, Stellantis will now produce that model at its facility in Illinois.

Government Funding Under Scrutiny

This decision led to strong criticism from the Canadian government, which quickly warned Stellantis of potential legal action after contributing more than CA$1 billion (about $731 million) for retooling the Brampton plant.

While attending The Canadian International Auto Show, Trevor Longley, president and CEO of Stellantis Canada, expressed that the company aims to keep producing vehicles in Brampton for many years ahead.

“The reality is that we want to build cars in Brampton,” he told . “We’ve been in Canada for 100 years. We’ve been making cars in Canada for 100 years, and we want to continue making cars for the next 100.”

According to Longley, Stellantis is having “productive dialogue with the federal government” and has provided support for the 3,000 workers who were laid off at that site.

Currently, while operations at Brampton are on hold, Stellantis has ramped up production of the Dodge Charger and Chrysler Pacifica at another location in Ontario.

“We’re actually one of the only OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) that made more cars in Canada than the previous year, and we’re going to do that again this year,” Longley states. Recently, Stellantis hired 1,700 new employees at its Ontario site for a third shift and brought on over 600 engineers for its Automotive Research and Development Center located in Windsor.
