A man from Brampton is facing several charges after the Ontario Provincial Police reported that he tried to outrun officers in a remote part of Northwestern Ontario, only to be stopped with a tire deflation device.

The event took place Tuesday morning on Highway 17 in Wiggins Township, which is a sparsely populated area about 114 kilometers northeast of Thunder Bay.

According to Schreiber OPP, an officer who was monitoring traffic spotted a 2020 BMW driving at 138 km/h just before 10:30 a. m.

Police stated that the driver ignored their commands to stop and instead veered onto Mountain Bay Road, which is a dead-end secondary road with limited exit options.

Officers quickly positioned patrol cars to block parts of the roadway. They then used a tire deflation device to prevent any further escape, effectively bringing the situation under control.

The driver was found and arrested shortly afterward without any additional incidents.

Hamza Aftab, 22, from Brampton, has been charged with flight from a peace officer, speeding, failing to present a driver’s license, and not displaying two license plates.

Authorities also mentioned that this vehicle had previously been involved in another incident where it failed to stop in Halton Region, and the suspect was already wanted on outstanding warrants there.

Aftab was held in custody awaiting his court appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice.
