How does this work?

Ontario plans to purchase extra power to satisfy growing demand throughout the province.

Making the announcement in the present day (Dec. 11) in Brampton, Minister of Vitality and Electrification Stephen Lecce mentioned the federal government is increasing the most important aggressive power procurement within the province’s historical past by 50 per cent.

Lecce mentioned the federal government is growing the goal for the procurement from 5,000 megawatts (MW) to as much as 7,500 MW.

Vitality procurement is the method of sourcing power from suppliers.

In keeping with the provincial authorities, Ontario’s Unbiased Electrical energy System Operator (IESO) has launched an up to date electrical energy demand forecast which now reveals the province will want 75 per cent extra electrical energy by 2050, which Lecce mentioned is the equal of including 4 and a half cities the dimensions of Toronto to the grid.

“Our government is expanding what is already the largest competitive procurement in the province’s history as demand for electricity continues to grow,” mentioned Stephen Lecce, Minister of Vitality and Electrification. “This expanded procurement will deliver enough power for 1.6 million homes, which is critical as our population and economy continue to grow. Unlike the former government which allowed hydro rates to soar, we are keeping costs down by planning ahead and using competitive procurement.”

Lecce mentioned the procurement course of will probably be clear, aggressive, and technology-agnostic to safe the bottom price power sources.

“Access to sufficient, sustainable, and affordable energy is not just vital to helping businesses grow, it’s also a key factor in attracting new businesses and investment,” mentioned Jaipaul Massey-Singh, CEO, Brampton Board of Commerce. “This announcement by the Ontario government will help our province continue to be a premier destination for industry and help our economy grow.”
