ONTARIO’S Peel regional Police officers from the Safer Roads Team (SRT) have taken into custody a frequent reckless driver after a traffic stop in Brampton.

On March 18, around 11:45 a. m., police were notified of a prohibited driver when an Automated Licence Plate Reader (ALPR) detected a vehicle near Bovaird Drive and Sunforest Drive. Officers tried to pull the car over; however, the driver took off dangerously.

The following day, March 19, at about 8 a. m., officers spotted the same vehicle near Sunforest Drive and Wexford Road and began organizing an arrest plan for the driver. When the vehicle moved, officers swiftly intervened to stop it. The driver tried to escape by reversing into one of their cruisers, but officers managed to block him in with their vehicles, preventing any chase and further risk to public safety. Upon arrest, they found that the driver had a replica firearm in his possession.

Further inquiries revealed that this driver was involved in three previous incidents where he evaded police while they attempted to pull him over for various offenses. In each case, his actions posed significant danger to others on the road.

The driver, identified as 34-year-old Iqbal Dhatt from Brampton, has been arrested and remains in custody facing multiple charges:

•    Flight from Police (two counts)
•    Dangerous Operation (two counts)
•    Mischief Over $5,000
•    Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
•    Fail to Comply with Release Order (two counts)
•    Race Motor Vehicle
•    Drive Under Suspension
•    Fail to Surrender Insurance Card
•    Fail to Surrender Permit for Motor Vehicle
•    Colour Coating Obscuring Interior

This investigation is ongoing and more charges are expected. Iqbal is also under scrutiny from Canada Border Services Agency regarding his immigration status.

Anyone who has information about this incident is encouraged to contact investigators with SRT at 905-453-3311 ext. 3710. You can also provide information anonymously through Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at peelcrimestoppers. ca.
