Toronto Metropolitan University has announced that a $25 million funding increase is a “historic” achievement for Brampton’s new medical school, which aims to train students to address the physician shortages in Canada.

After more than two years of planning, the Greater Toronto Area’s first new medical school in over a century opened its doors last year in Brampton, offering around 80 undergraduate spots and 95 postgraduate positions for its first semester.

The federal government allocated $25 million as part of the federal budget for 2026, funding that the school believes will help “address the physician shortage and expand access to primary care across Ontario and Canada.”

“This funding will allow us to move forward with purpose, ensuring that our facilities match the scale of our ambition and the needs of our students, faculty, partners and patients,” said TMU President and Vice-Chancellor Mohamed Lachemi in a release.

The school has also launched two TMU Integrated Health Centre clinics in Brampton-one at the campus (situated in the old Bramalea Civic Centre) and another located downtown at 74 Queen St. W.

Prime Minister Mark Carney mentioned this week that these funds represent an investment by the federal government into “major projects, to new homes, to better healthcare.”

“The new medical school in Brampton means more Canadians will get the care they need,” Carney stated on social media.

In 2023, data released by the Ontario College of Family Physicians revealed that over 223,000 individuals in the Region of Peel (which includes Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon) lack a family doctor; this figure is projected to rise to 430,000 by 2026.

The school is expected to stimulate economic growth and assist with increasing nurse recruitment within the healthcare system. The Brampton City Council donated the $48 million Bramalea Civic Centre building along with most surrounding land to TMU.

The City has indicated it plans to spend at least $20 million on renovations necessary for programming and operations related to the School of Medicine.
