Ontario Premier Doug Ford calls it “fantastic” news that U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is planning to purchase armoured vehicles from a Brampton-based company.

This week, reports surfaced about the U. S. government’s plans to procure 20 Senator vehicles for its ICE officers, with a total value of around $10 million.

“That’s fantastic, I’ve been through that plant,” Ford said when asked about the news on Wednesday. “They make great military vehicles.”

The Senators are armoured tactical vehicles used by Ukraine during its conflict with Russia, manufactured by Roshel, which is located in Brampton, Ont. The Americans intend to source them exclusively from this company because it can fulfill the order within 30 days.

The order from one of the most controversial segments of the Trump administration comes as U. S. tariffs hurt Ontario’s economy, recently being cited for 1,000 job losses at Algoma Steel.

“I know it’s ironic, but that’s alright,” Ford said. “We’ll take orders anywhere in the world and thank goodness that the Americans are ordering it off us.”

The department commonly known as ICE faces significant scrutiny and allegations of human rights violations as U. S. President Donald Trump continues efforts to deport many immigrants living in the country illegally.
