Canada’s City of Brampton is excited about the Ontario government’s decision to extend the Hazel Mc Callion Line into downtown Brampton with a new rapid transit tunnel.

This groundbreaking project aims to deliver quick, dependable, and eco-friendly transit while boosting connectivity and aligning with the City’s goal for a vibrant downtown area.

The Rapid Transit Tunnel

The planned underground extension, covering about 2.5 miles, will stretch from the Brampton Gateway Terminal to downtown Brampton, connecting the Hazel Mc Callion Line to the city’s center.

This investment guarantees smooth integration with Brampton Transit, Züm, GO Transit, and other regional transit networks, offering residents and businesses greater accessibility and convenience.

Benefits of Hazel Mc Callion Extension

The extension of the Hazel Mc Callion Line is anticipated to drive major economic growth in Brampton, creating around 47,000 new housing units and 17,000 jobs throughout this project’s duration.

These new opportunities will encourage urban renewal in the city’s downtown area, further establishing Brampton as a prime spot for growth and innovation.

The project will focus on linking key areas like the Brampton Innovation District and downtown core, supporting the City’s long-term economic and urban development plans.

Key benefits for Brampton include:

Better connectivity: The extension will link downtown Brampton with major transit systems across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

Lesser congestion: By promoting transit use, this project will help reduce traffic on some of Brampton’s busiest roads.

Environmental sustainability: Clean electric-powered light rail vehicles will emit nearly zero emissions, encouraging greener transportation options.

Economic growth: The upgraded transit infrastructure will draw in businesses, residents, and investments to the heart of the city.

Extension Facts

The Hazel Mc Callion Line extension is part of North America’s largest transit expansion initiative. Ontario is investing nearly $70 billion over ten years to modernize public transit systems.

This project has been designated as a priority under the Building Transit Faster Act in 2024; it will benefit from faster approvals that ensure timely completion while providing good value for taxpayers.

As Ontario’s third-largest city keeps growing and changing, the Hazel Mc Callion Line extension will be essential for shaping Brampton’s transportation strategy-offering residents efficient, sustainable, and accessible transit choices for years ahead.
