BRAMPTON – A new community centre and park in Brampton will be the first initiative backed by Ottawa’s recently introduced Build Communities Strong Fund, a 10-year, $51-billion infrastructure program aimed at enhancing housing, public services, and local development.

Ontario is expected to receive the largest portion of provincial and territorial funding, with up to $6 billion earmarked over 10 years, pending final agreements.

The Embleton Community Centre and Park is set to get $64 million in federal funding for a planned 175,000-square-foot facility in the city’s southwest. This project will feature a pool, gymnasium, fitness centre, childcare area, and multi-use community spaces, along with outdoor recreational facilities.

This Brampton project is one of 13 early developments that will be supported through the program aimed at speeding up infrastructure construction across the nation. More details about the project are expected soon.

When finished, the Embleton Community Centre will serve as a planned 175,000-square-foot multi-use community hub designed for residents of all ages and abilities. It aims to become southwest Brampton’s go-to spot for recreation programs and lessons in fitness, arts, culture, and social gatherings. The design emphasizes energy efficiency and sustainability while aiming for LEED Silver and Net Zero Ready standards to lessen environmental impact while paving the way for full Net Zero in the future.

Amenities at the Embleton Community Centre and Park will include an eight-lane competitive lap pool, leisure/teaching pool, gymnasium, childcare facility, multipurpose meeting rooms for youth activities and public gatherings as well as a fitness centre alongside outdoor seasonal recreational areas.

The national fund is organized into three main sections: long-term funding agreements with provinces and territories; direct federal delivery of large-scale or regionally significant projects; and a community stream focused on local infrastructure like roads, bridges, and public facilities.

The program plans to allocate $17.2 billion to provinces and territories over ten years with funding tied to cost-sharing agreements designed to reduce construction barriers including development fees linked to housing projects.

An additional $6 billion will go towards projects managed directly by the federal government while $27.8 billion is set aside for community-level infrastructure initiatives.

Alongside recreation spaces and community facilities eligible projects also encompass healthcare buildings, post-secondary infrastructure plus housing-related systems such as water supplies transit options and transportation networks.

Federal representatives indicate that this program aims to attract significantly more investment from other government levels as well as private sector contributions with provinces anticipated to match federal funds. This overall funding model is expected to create tens of thousands of jobs each year while fostering economic growth over the next decade.

Brampton municipal leaders express that the Embleton project will cater to a rapidly expanding section of their city where council has already allocated $148 million toward its development.

The Build Communities Strong Fund also stipulates that some funds must be directed toward rural areas Northern regions Indigenous communities along with Indigenous-led initiatives within direct delivery streams.
