Canada is known for its strict gun laws, allowing most people to live peacefully. However, that peace was disrupted last summer in several neighborhoods across Southern Ontario. A shocking investigation by York Regional Police has revealed that an organized crime group, receiving information from Toronto Police officers, is behind the chaos.

Throughout August and September of last year, residents in London, Vaughan, and Brampton found themselves jolted awake by gunfire ringing out on their otherwise quiet streets.

As part of a major press conference held at York Regional Police headquarters Thursday morning, officials presented videos showing these alarming gang-related shootings. They detailed how these specific attacks and a plot to kill a corrections officer in the Toronto area involved at least seven current members of the Toronto Police Service and one retired officer who allegedly supplied information to a criminal network with global connections. This scandal is being labeled as one of Canada’s most significant cases of police corruption.

The Pointer has learned from sources that officers from other police departments in Southern Ontario, including Peel Police, may also be part of this ongoing inquiry into police misconduct.

The investigation known as Project South focuses on a widespread network of organized crime and suggests that police officers aided in carrying out shootings and other illegal activities across Southern Ontario. According to York Police, 19 additional suspects have been arrested during this extensive investigation spanning several months.

“This is a deeply disappointing and sad day for policing,” stated York Police Chief Jim Mac Sween. “It shows how these criminals can infiltrate institutions throughout our society.”

When asked by a CBC reporter about rumors regarding involvement from other police forces, York Deputy Chief Ryan Hogan-who leads the investigation-did not confirm any such implications but assured that every lead would be thoroughly investigated.

The evidence against the Toronto officers came to light mid-last year when York Police took over the case to avoid any conflicts; thus Toronto Police only assisted without having investigative powers themselves.

No responses were provided Thursday to inquiries sent to both York Police and Peel Police.

“Organized crime is an insidious problem affecting various institutions, including law enforcement,” Hogan mentioned during the press conference. “We are fully aware it could involve multiple agencies.” He emphasized their commitment to exploring all connections between the arrested officers and organized crime elements.

Toronto’s Chief Myron Demkiw attended the press conference as well and described discovering his officers’ involvement as “painful and unsettling.”

“It needs to be addressed openly and honestly,” he remarked. As a result of Project South’s shocking findings, Chief Demkiw has requested an independent audit from Ontario’s Inspector General of Policing.

The charges stemming from Project South are extensive and shocking-almost resembling something out of a crime novel.

Charges include conspiracy to commit murder, shootings, extortion, robbery, drug trafficking offenses involving firearms, bribery, obstruction of justice along with theft of personal property and unauthorized access to private data. It’s alleged that some Toronto police officers accessed confidential information which was then handed over to organized crime groups facilitating shootings throughout Southern Ontario. The evidence points towards links within the tow-truck industry; one non-police suspect has direct ties here-a sector linked closely with violence in recent years around the GTA.

The most chilling revelation shared Thursday involved an officer providing details about a corrections officer’s address who was targeted three times in what appears to have been an unsuccessful murder plot orchestrated by criminals connected with this network. A late-night shooting attempt was interrupted by law enforcement; security footage captured other suspects at the victim’s home trying unsuccessfully after they were caught on video surveillance.

The following officers are among those charged:

  • 56-year-old Constable Timothy Barnhardt faces 17 charges related to accepting bribes as a peace officer along with breaches of trust;
  • 42-year-old Sergeant Robert Black faces four charges including conspiracy related offenses;
  • 49-year-old Sergeant Carl Grellette also faces multiple counts related mainly around breach of trust;
  • 38-year-old Constable Saurabjit Bedi has six charges against him including conspiracy issues;
  • 24-year-old Constable Elias Mouawad faces two charges concerning public trust violations;
  • 57-year-old Constable Derek Mc Cormick stands charged with six crimes including obstruction;
  • 29-year-old Constable John Madeley Jr., son of retired Constable John Madeley Sr., faces two counts concerning breaches or unauthorized computer use;
  • 55-year-old retired constable John Madeley Sr., now facing eleven charges includes past gambling-related allegations too alongside leaking sensitive information off-duty while serving recently until April this year-the duo is accused jointly here further linking back into corrupt activities together.

York police officials assert Barnhardt , Black , Bedi , Grellette had close dealings tied directly back toward Brian Da Costa , said leader inside operation centered around illicit drug networks under scrutiny through Project South. They explained undercover operations indicated certain policemen engaged willingly endorsing illegal cannabis sales via bribes intended providing shielded protection away meaningful investigations occurring against them.

None yet proven through court proceedings.

The troubling news-that police personnel seemingly accepted bribes ultimately shielding dangerous criminals who wreaked havoc upon communities-is causing widespread shock across Ontario ever since announcements rolled out publicly shedding light much darker sides hidden before everyone else could see. Social media users voiced distrust now evident where faith long put forth eroded considerably each passing moment after releases surfaced ; “We need another whole force just charge this cop” echoed sentiments reflected common frustrations expressed widely henceforward since words initially reported surrounding case made waves immediately thereafter revealing disturbing patterns brewing potentially far beyond single jurisdictional reaches here alone…
