Authorities report that a sixth person has died following a deadly two-vehicle accident in Mapleton, Ont. last week, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.
A passenger van and an SUV collided around 7:30 p. m. on June 12 in the Township of Mapleton, which is about 35 kilometres northwest of Kitchener-Waterloo, as noted in an OPP news release on Saturday.
The collision resulted in the deaths of five children aged four, six, eight, ten, and twelve years old. Five other individuals from the passenger vehicle suffered injuries.
The driver of the SUV, a 42-year-old man from Brampton, passed away in hospital on Friday due to his injuries, stated the OPP. Initially, police reported his death occurred on Tuesday but later corrected it to Friday.
A funeral service will take place on Saturday afternoon for the five children from the Doerksen family. Peter, 12; Helena, 10; Sara, 8; Maggie, 6; and Susy, 4; will be honored by friends and family at a rural church located outside Elmira.
Police are still investigating the incident and are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers.
