Ontario’s police watchdog reports that a man in Barrie has died after being hit by a stun gun fired by police.

Barrie police indicated they stopped a vehicle near Dunlop Street West and Frances Street around 3:30 a. m. on Friday. Officials say they arrested a 25-year-old female driver on charges of impaired driving.

While making that arrest, officers discovered that a 29-year-old man in the vehicle was wanted under an arrest warrant. He ran from the scene but was found shortly afterward by the police.

The SIU noted that the man and the officers ended up in a backyard where there was an “interaction” that “included the deployment of a conducted energy weapon,” which is commonly referred to as a Taser or stun gun.

The SIU reported that the man showed no vital signs following the incident and was later declared dead at the hospital.

This agency is required to investigate any situation where police actions may have led to death or serious injury.
