Barrie, Ont., police report that a mother has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of her 10-year-old child.
Authorities stated they conducted a welfare check on New Year’s Eve at about 3 p. m. at a residence in the Bayview Drive and Little Avenue area.
The child was discovered deceased inside the home. Police have not disclosed the cause of death.
The mother, a 47-year-old woman from Barrie, was found in the house and taken to the hospital.

Police indicated that after she was medically cleared, they charged her with first-degree murder on Tuesday. She has since been taken into custody.
“Due to the nature of the incident and to respect the privacy of the family involved, updates will only be provided as the investigation permits,” police stated.
