A city in northern Ontario reports that it has been facing a major weather situation for over a month as teams work to manage unprecedented snowfall and reduced roadways.

An announcement from the City of Barrie revealed that the region has been under a significant weather event since Dec. 28, 2025, which marks the longest continuous declaration in the city’s history.

The “high” level alert is still active as of Wednesday afternoon while crews are working to restore winter maintenance standards and ensure roads are safe.

So far, it’s reported that Barrie has received about 300 centimetres of snow from Nov. 1, 2025, to Jan. 28, 2026, which is over 9.5 feet.

While snow clearing efforts continue on main roads, collector roads, narrow curb lanes and on-street cycling paths, the city mentioned that maintenance might take longer than usual.

In residential neighborhoods, contracted teams are working to clear snow piles from cul-de-sacs while city staff state that crews are addressing sight-line issues where snowbanks are particularly high.

The significant weather event won’t be lifted until all narrowed roads and cycling lanes have been fully dealt with according to their latest update.

Residents are reminded that overnight on-street parking isn’t allowed on city streets between 12:01 a. m. and 7 a. m., and between 3 a. m. and 6 a. m. in downtown areas from Dec. 1 through March 31.

The city officials also advise residents to clear flat areas beside or at the end of driveways for garbage, recycling and organics carts and keep them out of the path of snow removal equipment.

The city plans to provide updates if there are any further changes or impacts.
