Barrie has been identified as the most hazardous city for drivers in Ontario, based on a study by insurance comparison platform My Choice. ca.

My Choice’s yearly review analyzed over 200,000 car insurance quotes gathered since 2020. Using a scoring system that factors in accident history (70%) and driving violations (30%), the company ranked cities from safest to most dangerous.

Barrie climbed to the top of the danger rankings this year, surpassing Brantford. This change is mainly due to increased accident rates rather than more traffic violations.

The raw data presented in the study reveals:

14.54% of Barrie drivers have at least one accident on record 12.41% have one or more infractions

These statistics position Barrie ahead of Burlington, Brantford, Kingston, Belleville, and other mid-sized cities that also experienced declines.

Collision Rates Across the Province Keep Rising

My Choice reports that Ontario’s overall collision rate has increased again last year, going up from 10.78% in 2024 to 11.06% in 2025.

CEO Aren Mirzaian emphasizes that drivers should focus on factors they can control-especially during tough winter weather.

“Drivers can’t control the regional risk trends, but they can control how they drive. Following the defensive driving principles, such as leaving extra space, slowing down in poor conditions, and minimizing distractions, remains one of the most effective ways to stay safe on the road. Winter tires are also a smart seasonal upgrade that can qualify you for an insurance discount.”

The report notes that even a single at-fault accident can nearly double insurance premiums when it comes time for renewal.

Despite its size and heavy traffic volume, Toronto once again ranked as Ontario’s safest driving environment.

My Choice aims to help drivers better understand changing risk patterns within their communities where they live and travel.
