Work has begun on a significant infrastructure project aimed at upgrading an important section of Ninth Line in west Mississauga. This project will enhance safety, efficiency, and prepare the area for future growth.

City officials celebrated the launch of construction today with a groundbreaking ceremony for the Ninth Line Road Widening project that stretches between Eglinton Avenue West and Derry Road West. The project involves improving a 6.7-kilometre segment of road and is projected to finish by 2027.

“We are building road infrastructure for more than just drivers in their cars, but to also support pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders,” said Sam Rogers, commissioner, transportation and works. “This project is also aligned with our Vision Zero framework with the long-term goal of zero traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries in our city.

“This type of multi-modal infrastructure highlights how community feedback and a robust planning process can make an impact for those travelling along this major corridor, now and in the future.”

The upgrades are aimed at meeting increasing transportation demands while facilitating the creation of over 3,400 new housing units nearby. Once finished, this improved corridor will offer safer travel options for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, and transit users.

“Ninth Line is no longer a rural road on the outskirts of the city; it is becoming a critical artery for the Erin Mills community,” said Sheref Sabawy, Member of Provincial Parliament for Mississauga-Erin Mills. “In recent years, we have seen incredible community milestones come to life here, including the Churchill Meadows Community Centre and Mattamy Sports Park.

“Expanding Ninth Line will allow development to continue, paving the way for new homes and development in the community we love.”

A few key aspects of this initiative include widening Ninth Line from two lanes to four lanes-two lanes going each way-to enhance traffic flow and cut down congestion during peak hours.

New sidewalks, curbs, and gutters will be added along the route while protected cycle tracks will be set up behind the roadway curb to ensure safer paths for walkers and bikers. Additionally, upgraded transit stops will be introduced along with new street lighting, extra traffic signals, and enhanced intersections.

To combat weather-related issues, the City plans to upgrade stormwater systems and improve drainage methods to lessen flooding risks during heavy rainfall events. A culvert bridge within this area will also receive improvements like better waterproofing and an expanded roadway to boost resilience against storms.

Residents can look forward to improved access to local parks, trails, and Osprey Marsh which will create safer connections to recreational areas nearby.

Apart from transportation enhancements, this project is anticipated to significantly influence how Mississauga’s last remaining greenfield area develops into a well-connected neighborhood that’s friendly towards public transport as well as sustainable living.

City officials believe these upgrades won’t only ease daily commutes for current residents but also ensure that our transportation network can accommodate ongoing growth in years ahead.
