Ontario Provincial Police report that five children have lost their lives and several others were critically injured after a two-vehicle crash in Wellington County on Friday evening.

The accident occurred around 7:30 p. m. at the intersection of Wellington Road 12 and Fourth Line in Mapleton Township, just northwest of Guelph.

Authorities say a passenger van carrying ten people collided with a sport utility vehicle that had one occupant at the intersection.

“Tragically, five children lost their lives. I can confirm that the victims are all related,” said Superintendant Dwight Thib during a news conference on Saturday afternoon.

Four girls and one boy, aged between four and twelve, were killed, according to Thib.

“This is an unimaginable loss. On behalf of the Ontario Provincial Police, I extend our deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, and the community during this incredibly difficult time,” he added.

The driver of the SUV was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Thib expressed gratitude towards emergency responders who arrived at the scene and provided immediate assistance.

“I would also like to thank the Good Samaritans that stopped and provided assistance to our first responders during this tragedy,” he said.

In a post on X, Doug Ford shared his condolences.

“My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the children who were killed in the tragic collision that took place yesterday in Mapleton Township, and with those currently being cared for in hospital.”

“Let’s all stand together with those who are grieving during this terrible time,” his post further read.

In an overnight video update, Wellington County OPP Const. Matt Burton referred to the incident as a “serious collision resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities.”

Burton mentioned that three patients were airlifted to trauma centers while several others were transported to local hospitals.

The OPP traffic incident management team is now helping with the investigation.

The police stated they will not release additional details until they notify next of kin for victims involved.
The intersection was closed for hours while investigators assessed the scene but has since been reopened.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is urged to contact Wellington County OPP.
